Walk to Action to Prevent Child Abuse in Texas

Walk to Action is a 20-mile fundraising event in San Antonio to benefit Prevent Child Abuse Texas. Since the walk’s inception six years ago, I’ve designed the marketing materials, including brochures, postcards, and posters. It was always a challenge to use the snapshots offered by walkers and volunteers. Most of what I had to work with was posed photos of people in sunglasses in harsh light. So this year I volunteered to photograph the walk.

You’d think it would be easier than the 275-mile AIDS rides I photograph every September, but not necessarily. For the action shots on the AIDS ride, I shoot from a car or from a fixed spot on the road. To capture the walkers in action, I need to shoot them as they passed me, then run ahead and shoot more. The slogan for the event is “I walked 20 miles to save a child.” Well, I feel like I ran 20 miles to save a child. It was worth every step.
